Cherry trees
Explore our mother plants and varieties, rootstocks and plant types
The cherry tree (Prunus avium) is a deciduous fruit tree that reaches between 5 and 15 meters in height. It has a smooth trunk, a rounded crown, and oval leaves with serrated edges. It blooms in early spring with abundant white or pink flowers, highly valued for their ornamental appeal and their role in pollination. Its fruits, the cherries, are small drupes, sweet or slightly acidic depending on the variety. It prefers temperate climates, deep, well-drained soils, and requires sufficient winter chill hours for good production. It is widely cultivated for its flavor and beauty.

The varieties originate from both budwood blocks established from quarantined materials (controlled and tested by the SAG) and SAG Certification increment blocks, which are evaluated for health status and managed to:
• ensure genetic safety by observing and classifying the fruit of each mother tree to authorize its use as a reliable source of material.
• provide high-quality propagation material through appropriate fertilization and phytosanitary management.
Materials are also obtained from commercial orchards established from quarantined materials, which are evaluated genetically and phytosanitaryly over successive seasons.
Main rootstocks
- Serie GiSelA® (P. Cerasus x P. Canescens)
- Serie Ma x Ma (P. avium x P. mahaleb)
- Colt (P. avium x P. pseudocerasus)
- Grupo Mahaleb (Prunus mahaleb)
- CAB 6P (Prunus cerasus)
Originario de Alemania, de esta hibridación se crean el GiSelA®5, GiSelA®12 y el GiSelA®6.
They promote rapid fruit set, forming strong flower buds that increase the likelihood of fruit set by inducing early ripening. They produce open angles and significantly reduce the final tree size compared to Mericier. GiSelA®5 reduces vigor by 50%, GiSelA®12 by 60%, and GiSelA®6 by 70%.
They are recommended for low-yielding varieties, such as Bing and Korida, but not for highly productive varieties like Van or Lapins. They adapt to a wide range of soils.
Of American origin, it adapts well to various soil types (except very heavy soils with drainage problems or very thin soils).
It is compatible with many varieties. It is a multifunctional rootstock that can be used with a wide range of varieties.
Of English origin. It gives the variety approximately 80% more vigor than Mericier. It is recommended for medium-to-high fruit set varieties and produces a well-balanced tree.
It adapts well to heavy soils and those with drainage problems. However, it does not adapt well to thin soils or those with low water supply. It is highly susceptible to gall disease (Agrobacterium tumefaciens).
Within this group, Univiveros® offers two rootstocks of French origin:
– Santa LucÃa 64, also known as SL64 (clonal): This rootstock provides uniformity to the seedlings and gives the variety approximately 80% more vigor than Mericier.
– Pontaleb: This rootstock reduces the variety’s vigor by 10-20% compared to SL64.
Both rootstocks adapt well to shallow soils, are susceptible to Phytophthora and root asphyxiation, and do not tolerate heavy soils with drainage problems.
They have some resistance to calcareous soils and withstand the stress of hot summers quite well.
Of Italian origin, this is a semi-dwarfing rootstock with approximately 70% of the vigor of the seedling. It has good rooting capacity, is compatible with numerous varieties, and tends to produce suckers.
It exhibits some tolerance to heavy soils, some resistance to calcareous soils, and sensitivity to water stress. It confers earlier fruit production than Colt and improves fruit size.
Types of plants
We are convinced that orchard uniformity begins with planting a population of homogeneous plants.
To achieve this, Univiveros® has adopted a segregation system based on measuring the size of its plants five centimeters above the sapling growth or immediately below the graft union of dormant buds. These sizes are classified as follows:
| CALIBER | MILLIMETERS | TYPE OF PLANT TO WHICH IT IS APPLIED |
| S (Super) | 19,1 mm y mayores | Term – OD |
| XL (Extra Large) | 16,1 – 19,0 mm | Term – OD |
| L (Large) | 12,1 – 16,0 mm | Term – OD |
| M (Medium) | 10,1 – 12,0 mm | Term – OD |
Variety developed over a full season in a nursery on two-year-old rootstock.
Plant with a large root system and ample storage capacity. These are available for delivery between June and August.
Grafted variety with two buds on current-year rootstock, which sprout in the orchard in spring and then grow vigorously and well-balanced. Delivery in July-August.
Plants whose rootstock has been grown in a 3-liter container for one season. The rootstock is grafted in winter and the plants are delivered once the variety has grown to between 40 – 60 cm in height.
This growth occurs between October and early November. These plants have 100% of their roots, with the variety growing in each one, resulting in very uniform gardens.
Traceability of Propagation Material:
A rigorous labeling and registration system is in place for all propagation material, resulting in coded records for each species, variety, and origin of every plant at all times.
Traceability in the Production Process:
In addition to carefully managing the sources of our propagation material, we maintain a rigorous labeling system for propagation material. This system results in coded records of the varietal identity and origin of each propagated plant at every stage of the production process.
